Fast acting firefighters helped save a home and avert a disaster in Katonah, Saturday afternoon.

At around 3:30 p.m. firefighters responded to a blaze that engulfed the deck of a home on Bedford Avenue.

Firefighters arrived to the scene at 9 Bedford Ave. and found that the home's gas grill was also on fire and the flames were creeping towards the house's outer wall.

With the help of six fire engines, the fire was quickly put out with moderate damage done to the siding of the house. No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.

"These are three-story Victorian homes and if fire gets into walls, it pretty much can spread anywhere," said Katonah Fire Chief Dean Papas. "The firefighters did a fantastic job keeping this thing from getting out of control,"

According to investigation report, the origin of the fire has not yet been determined, and while the home is structurally sound, Papas recommended that the family find lodging for a few days.

At around 6 p.m., a reporter saw a few people milling about on Bedford Avenue, loading belongings into waiting cars.

The Katonah Fire Department was assisted by departments from Bedford Hills, Mount Kisco and Goldens Bridge. Westchester EMS and the Katonah-Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps were also on scene.
