MKFD Battles Fully Involved Fire on Lexington Ave.
By Firefighter James Tipa, Jr
June 15, 2011
At 6:27 AM on Wednesday June 15th the Mount Kisco FD was dispatched to a unknown type fire at 88 Lexington Avenue. As firefighters pulled up to the firehouse it was very clear that there was a working fire downtown. Looking north from Station 3 the sky was black covering the downtown area. Firefighters quickly jumped onto E-105 and pulled up to a fully involved house fire located behind three multi-story occupied multiple dwellings. As first units arrived the Mount Kisco PD reported victims jumping from the second story of the two story fire building. A total of five patients were injured during the fire. Firefighters and EMS personnel quickly helped those injured down to Lexington Ave. where EMS setup a triage point. Due to the heavy fire load operations began as exterior and shortly after putting multiple hose lines in place went into interior operations. The MKFD had protected the adjacent structures and knocked down the heavy fire. Once the fire was put under control crews entered the building through the front door and rear windows to the second floor and attic where fire was still burning in the roof and behind walls. Firefighters quickly opened up and hit all hot spots. At one point the Incident Commander had the scene cleared due to a heavy odor of gas. Con Edison cut electric to the building and controlled the gas leak allowing the Cause and Origin Team to begin its investigation and firefighters to finish up overhaul operations. The fire was put under control and operations were in the overhaul stage 45 minutes after arrival. A great stop by the MKFD and great effort to protect exposures, assist victims, and knock out the heavy fire load. There was no collapse to any portion of the building and no firefighters sustained any injury while working. After the investigation the fire is believed to have started due to a faulty electrical system in the building. Victims (three adults and two children) were sleeping when the fire had broken out and had to jump out of the second floor window since the staircase had been consumed by fire. The victims received burns and smoke inhalation and were transported to Westchester Medical Center and Northern Westchester Hospital Center, we wish them all a speedy recovery. Thank you to the Mutual Aid Companies who stood by for other calls in the district Bedford Hills FAST Team, Chappaqua FD for standby, and Katonah FD for standby.
